Corrosion-erosion of SS316 under flowing Pb-Bi

Kikuchi, Kenji; Kurata, Yuji; Saito, Shigeru; Futakawa, Masatoshi; Sasa, Toshinobu; Oigawa, Hiroyuki; Miura, Kuniaki*

Nihon Kikai Gakkai 2002-Nendo Nenji Taikai Koen Rombunshu, p.273 - 274, 2002/09

Corrosion-erosion properties of type 316 austenitic stainless steel were investigated at 450oC. The study aims at developing ADS, accelerator driven system, for nuclear transmutation of long lived activated nuclei to shorter ones. After 3000 hrs flow of eutectic 45Pb-55Bi loop tubes were cut and analyzed by optical microscope, SEM, EDX, WDX and TEM. It is concluded that corrosion-erosion depth is maximally 0.1mm per 3000 hrs and Cr-Fe crystals were precipitated in the lower temperature of flowing channel. Further more inspection results of Electro Magnetic Pump, Electro Magnetic Flow meter and controlling valve were also reported. Output signal from EMF was stable after certain time duration. In this experiment oxygen content in Pb-Bi was not actively controlled but Pb-Bi was covered by 4N Argon gas.

In liquid metal cooled fast breeder reactors (LMFBRs), electro-magnetic flowmeters (EMFs) have been extensively used, because they have satisfactory properties as the instrumentation sensor including the radiation-resistance and it is easy to assure tightness of the coolant boundary. In consideration of impotance of the flowrate measurement and the EMFs degradiation, it is necessary to calibrate them at appropriate time intervals as well as other instruments. However it is difficult to remove the EMF from the cooling system and the calibration by real flow in a test loop is almost impossible, because the pipe of the EMF makes up the coolant boundary. Therefore, it has been desired to develop a simple and accurate calibration method without removing the EMF from the system. The possibility to make use of the correlation method, which is simple and able to be applied in service condition, was suggested. In the method, the transit time of the fluid is obtained from the correlation between the output voltage flucluations observed by two pairs of electrodes attached to the pipe along the fluid flow direction, and then the flow rate can be calculated. However, the correlation method has not been applied practically to EMF calibration, because there are problems that the flow rate measured by correlation method inclines to larger side than true one and shows too large scattering. In this thesis, first the process in which the turbulent behavior of the flowing fluid is transformed into the voltage fluctuation is considered and it is shown that the transit velocity of the fluctuation obtained by the correlation method is affected by the flow velocity near the center of the pipe rather than cross-sectional mean flow velocity. That is, since the output voltage of EMF is expressed by an integral of the flow velocity multiplied by a weighting function depending on the location over the whole cross-section of the pipe, the transit velocity of the voltage ...

Preliminary study in a sodium-loop facility for low flow-rate evaluation technology

Tanaka, Masaaki; Imamura, Hiroaki; Suzuki, Masashi; Murakami, Satoshi*

no journal, ,

In sodium-cooled fast reactors, electro-magnetic flow-meters (EMFs) installed in the cooling loops may have some degree of measurement uncertainty during the operation of the decay heat removal system by natural circulation because the flow rate in such condition is much decreased from that in the normal operation condition. Then, an evaluation technology in the low flow-rate condition complementary to the EMF has been developed. As the first trial, evaluation technology by analyzing correlations of temperature transient data on the outer surface of the pipe measured by thermo-couples at several locations along flow direction was examined in the existing sodium test loop. Preliminary evaluation results were reported and potentiality of the low flow-rate evaluation technology was confirmed.

Improvement of signal strength on primary heat transport system flow rate in pool type SFR

no journal, ,

Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS) flow rate is the most promising signal to detect the pump/diagrid link rupture in pool type SFR. The electromagnetic flowmeter is considered to measure the PHTS flow rate and is designed to install nearby outlet of the PHTS circulation pump in the current design of pool-type SFR with 600 MWe. The flowmeter could be significantly affected by the noise from pump motor. In order to improve the signal strength, the structure of flowmeter is drastically modified with the D-shape yokes and the magnetic circuits above and below an electrode.
